Jember is a city in East Java, Indonesia. The city is located in the northwest of Java Island, along the Brantas river. The city is bounded by Bondowoso Regency and Probolinggo Regency in the north, Lumajang Regency in the west, Banyuwangi Regency in the east, and the south bounded by the Indonesian Ocean.

Jember is known as the city of Tobacco. The city has a long history of gunshots and cigars. Around 1850, George Bernie started to plant Besuki Na Oogst (BNO) type tobacco after obtaining business use rights in the Jenggawah area. Bernie is a Dutchman of Scottish descent. Bernie's tobacco plantations are usually marketed in Europe. In the process, Bernie brought in workers from Blitar and Madura Island.

Currently, there are two types of tobacco commonly grown in Jember, namely Besuki Na Oogst (BNO) and Vor Oogst (VO). Na Oogst tobacco is generally grown in the southern Jember region. Usually, the tobacco is used as a dressing, binder, or wrapper as well as a cigar filler. While Vor Oogst is usually planted in the northern Jember region. In 2017 the export value of Jember tobacco and cigars reached Rp 1.5 trillion with a total production of around 8 thousand – 9 thousand tons per year.

The city of Jember also has some places to enjoy tobacco. Some places provide various types of tobacco such as black tobacco, white tobacco, along with tobacco-related equipment, such as pipes, cigars, and cutting tools.

Until now, most of the people of Jember still have tobacco plantations. This is the forerunner of the birth of the trademark of the city of Jember as the "City of Tobacco". If you look at the logo of Jember Regency, there is also a tobacco leaf which symbolizes that Jember is known as one of the largest tobacco commodity-producing regions in Indonesia.
